What carbon filtration solves
Water utilities disinfect with chlorine or chloramine, and while that keeps the supply safe, it's also what makes your shower smell like a pool and your water taste chemical. A whole-house carbon filter reduces that chlorine and chloramine taste and odor throughout the home. It's the most direct fix when your complaint is smell and taste rather than scale.
Carbon filtration does not soften water — it won't stop hard-water scale, which is a job for a softener. And for chloramine specifically (a more stable disinfectant that some systems use), a standard carbon filter is less effective than a catalytic carbon designed for it. We'll check what your utility uses and size the right media.

What's the difference between chlorine and chloramine, and does it matter?
Both are disinfectants utilities add to keep water safe. Chloramine is more stable and harder to remove than chlorine, so it needs catalytic carbon rather than standard carbon for effective reduction. It matters because a system sized for chlorine may underperform on chloramine — we check what your utility uses before recommending media.
Does carbon filtration soften water?
No. Carbon reduces chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor. It does not remove the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness and scale — that requires a water softener. If you have both a taste problem and a scale problem, you'd run both, which is common in Tampa.
How often does the carbon media need replacing?
It depends on the media type, your water use and how much disinfectant is in your supply. Whole-house carbon media typically lasts a few years before it needs refreshing. We'll tell you the expected interval for your setup, and we can handle the replacement as part of a maintenance plan.
Should I get whole-house carbon or just an under-sink filter?
If the goal is better-tasting water at only the kitchen tap, an under-sink filter or reverse osmosis may be enough. If you also want the chlorine smell gone from your showers and every faucet, a whole-house carbon filter is the right scope.
